Here are few words about the destination's historical information
Spinalonga Island
A little island called Spinalonga, situated near the mouth of the Elounda lagoon and north of the Gulf of Mirabello.
Its highest height is 53 meters, and its size is 85 acres.
The island’s past still makes people wonder.
It has served as a Venetian stronghold, a castle colony, a haven for rebels, an exile camp for lepers, and a communication connection with Cairo during the Second World War.
The Venetians who occupied Crete during that time had the island well-defended.
From an aesthetic perspective of the entire environment as well as from a structural and architectural point of view, the island still exhibits an unmatched beauty.
Its original name was Calydon, but the Venetians gave it the name Spinalonga after their term for long thorn, Spinalonga.
Another, weaker explanation is that the name Spinalonga is a paraphrase of “Stin Elounda,” which translates to “In Elounda.”
Another account claims that a stunning woman named Longa who resided in the fort gave the island its name.
Agios Nikolaos
The town of Agios Nikolaos, sometimes known as “Ag Nik” by British tourists, serves as Lassithi’s administrative center.
The area is dominated by the bottomless salt lake called Voulismeni.
The lake and the sea are separated by a little waterway, and the towering red rock and forest that surrounds them adds to the scene’s natural splendor.
A tiny park with pine trees rises above the lake, and a stone walk leads to a charming little fishing boat harbor in its southern part.
The city is home to fascinating museums of natural history, folklore, and archaeology, Byzantine cathedrals, a well-run harbor, busy pedestrian lanes (great for leisurely strolls), and medieval squares with lively cafés , taverns and all sort of shops.
